    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Szczesny was signed by Barcelona after Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered a season-ending knee injury in September. This was just weeks after the 84-time capped former Poland international announced a shock retirement from the sport. After joining Barca in October, the 34-year-old had to wait until the Spanish Super Cup in January to make his debut for the Blaugrana. Hansi Flick initially preferred to play Inaki Pena in goal, but recent weeks have confirmed Szczesny's status as the undisputed deputy for Ter Stegen.

  • WHAT WOJCIECH SZCZESNY SAID

Comparing his time at Barcelona with Juventus, Szczesny told reporters after the Atletico Madrid game on Sunday (h/t Football Espana): "I don’t like to make comparisons in life, but I can say that at Juventus, everything revolves around the result. The result is the most important thing. Here at Barca, there’s enormous joy in the type of football being played, and that’s contagious. It’s very surprising to see how many millions of people are watching what’s happening."

    WHAT NEXT FOR WOJCIECH SZCZESNY?

With Szczesny's contract expiring in the summer, MARCA have reported that Barca are eager to extend his deal, with the possibility of a two-year extension on the table. Flick clearly admires the player's professionalism, dressing room presence, and experience, and Szczesny admits that a decision will have to be made in the coming weeks: "It will probably be time soon to make a decision about my future. The most important thing now is to focus all my physical and mental energy on the upcoming matches. We have to play our best."

Szczesny will next be seen in action on Thursday, March 27, when the Catalans take on Osasuna in their rescheduled La Liga game.
