- Have lost two points for PSR breach
- Club will appeal against decision
WHAT HAPPENED?
It was announced on Monday that the Toffees have been hit with a two-point penalty by the Premier League for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules. The Merseyside club confirmed that they "have begun the preparations to appeal the [Premier League] Commission’s decision."
GettyTHE EXPLANATION
However, the appeal may not be resolved until after the end of the 2023-24 campaign, according to journalist Paul Joyce. The dispute with the Premier League revolves around money spent on stadium construction, which the Premier League consider to be losses, while Everton maintain the £16.6 million ($21m) breach should not be deemed a loss.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The deduction, which leaves Sean Dyche's team two points above the Premier League relegation zone, is the second Everton have been hit with this season. They lost 10 points for breaching financial rules earlier this season, though that punishment was reduced to six on appeal.
