Here’s a list of the top ATP Tour stars heading to Shanghai, China, for Masters 1000 glory.

The Asian tennis swing climaxes with the prestigious Shanghai Masters this October. It’s the 13th edition of the Chinese tournament, which was first introduced into the ATP Tour Masters 1000 series schedule back in 2009.

The Shanghai Masters is the only Masters event held outside North America and Europe. With prize money of $8,995,555 up for grabs, it’s jointly the most lucrative Masters tournament on the Masters series schedule with Indian Wells and Miami. The 2024 Shanghai winner will scoop a cool $1.1 million.
GOAL takes you through all the leading contenders hoping to reign supreme in Shanghai.

    Jannik Sinner

It’s been a breakthrough year for Jannik Sinner. The 23-year-old Italian claimed his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open at the start of 2024 and finished off the Slam season by capturing the US Open crown at Flushing Meadows in September. In between those successes, Sinner was victorious at the Miami Open and the Cincinnati Masters, and he’s been a dominant figure at the top of the ATP Tour rankings this season. He made his only previous appearance in Shanghai twelve months ago, where he was knocked out in the 4th round by Ben Shelton in a thrilling three-setter.

    Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev failed to build on a positive start to the 2024 Grand Slam season, which saw him reach the semis in Melbourne and his second career Slam Final at Roland Garros. He bowed out in the 4th Round at Wimbledon and reached the last eight at the US Open. However, the German has performed better in the second half of the Masters series schedule. He won his first Masters 1000 crown in three years in Rome and followed that up with a last-8 appearance in Montreal and a semi-final berth in Cincinnati. Despite a below-par performance in Shanghai last year, Zverev reached the final of the Chinese event in 2019 and the semis in 2018.

    Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz claimed back-to-back Grand Slam crowns for the first time when winning the French Open and Wimbledon this year. That took his total Grand Slam trophy haul to four. However, his second-round exit at the US Open was his worst Slam performance since losing in the second round at Wimbledon in 2021. Alcaraz also fell at the second hurdle in his previous Masters 1000 event appearance at Cincinnati in August. The Spanish sensation did receive a boost over the weekend when he earned his 200th tour-level win at the China Open in Beijing. Alcaraz is the second-fastest World No.1 to reach the 200-win mark, with only John McEnroe hitting that total quicker.

    Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic has been grabbing all the headlines, not for the first time. The Serbian legend, who has been the Shanghai Masters king on four occasions, returns to the prestigious Chinese tournament for the first time since 2019. Of course, the tournament wasn’t held between 2020 and 2022 due to Chinese travel restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Novak Djokovic holds the current record for the most ATP Masters 1000 titles he has won, having pocketed 40 in total during his dazzling tennis career. He’s also the only player to complete the Career Golden Masters, having reigned supreme at all the Masters series tournaments. Djokovic has yet to win a Masters crown in 2024, though, and he hasn’t failed to claim one during a calendar year since 2017, when he was injury-plagued. It’s also the first year since 2017 that Djokovic hasn’t lifted a Grand Slam trophy aloft.

    Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev hasn't won an ATP Masters 1000 series crown since claiming the Italian Open trophy in Rome last May. The Russian did reach the final of the 2024 Masters series opener in Indian Wells, where he was beaten in straight sets by Carlos Alcaraz (7-6, 6-1). Despite making it to the Miami Open semis, he has bowed out before the Quarter-Finals in four of the last five Masters series tournaments.

    Andrey Rublev

Andrey Rublev has failed to make his mark on the Grand Slam scene. The Russian has been unable to break his Quarter-Final hoodoo, falling at the last-8 hurdle on ten occasions, including at this year’s Australian Open. However, the Moscow-born player has fared much better at the ATP Masters series events. He has reached six Masters tournament finals since 2021 and has been crowned champion twice. For the first time at the 2023 Monte Carlo Masters and again at this year’s Madrid Open. Rublev finished the season well last year, as he was runner-up to Hurkacz at the Shanghai Masters and reached the Paris Masters semis.

    Taylor Fritz

Taylor Fritz is still buzzing following his recent US Open performance in New York. He may have lost to Jannik Sinner in the final at Flushing Meadows, but he will have taken a lot of positives from becoming the first American to reach a Grand Slam final in 15 years. You must return to March 2022 for the last time Fritz competed in an ATP Masters series event final. He was victorious on that occasion, beating Rafael Nadal in Indian Wells.
Amazingly, the Californian has only reached the semis of two Masters tournaments since then, and he’s bowed out at the first or second round stages in four of this year’s 1000 series events. Fritz fans will be hoping that their man can shrug off last week's opening-round exit to Arthur Fils at the Japan Open in Tokyo and rediscover some of his US Open form.

    Casper Ruud

Tennis pundits were hoping for great things from Casper Ruud after he reached three Grand Slam finals in 2022 and 2023. However, the Norwegian failed to kick on in 2024. Ruud bowed out of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open in the fourth round or earlier and only progressed to the semi-finals of the French Open as his quarter-final opponent, Novak Djokovic, pulled out prior to their last-8 encounter. On the ATP Masters 1000 series front, Ruud has reached event finals on two occasions in the past three years, but like with his previous Grand Slam final appearances, he had to settle for the runner-up spot again.

    Grigor Dimitrov

This year, Grigor Dimitrov reached the quarter-final stages at both the French Open and the US Open. You have to go way back to 2014 for the last time he managed to progress to the last eight rounds of more than one Slam in the same year. The Bulgarian star has also been runner-up twice during the previous eight Masters 1000 series tournaments. Before the first of those two finals appearances in Paris last year, Dimitrov hadn’t been in a Masters series event final since winning the Cincinnati Masters in 2017. Five consecutive Masters exits at the 4th round or earlier during the current year, though, will be a little concerning for Dimitrov's followers.

The 13th edition of the Rolex Shanghai Masters will be held from September 30th until October 13th, 2024. Qualifying takes place during the first two days (September 30th – October 1st), with places in the first round-up for grabs. The first round starts on Wednesday, October 2nd, with 96 players. The 32 seeds will receive first-round ‘byes’. First-round victors must clear five more obstacles to reach the tournament final on Sunday, October 13th.

Hubert Hurkacz became the lowest-ranked seed ever to lift the Rolex Shanghai Masters trophy in China last year when defeating Andrey Rublev 6-3, 3-6, 7-6. Unfortunately, the Pole, who has an injury-plagued season, won’t be able to defend his Shanghai crown this time. There was a slew of upsets in the event last year, with Rublev the only top-10 seed to make it past the fourth round. In the 2023 doubles event, 7th seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos defeated Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 to take their first title in Shanghai. Twelve months on, the Spanish/Argentinian duo are now the top seeds, aiming to claim a third Masters title in 2024.

With prize money of $8,995,555 up for grabs, the Rolex Shanghai Masters is jointly the most lucrative tournament on the Masters series schedule with Indian Wells and Miami. The 2024 Shanghai winner will scoop a cool $1.1 million.
