  • WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. men's national team first-choice goalkeeper Matt Turner was notably absent from Nottingham Forest's 18-man squad on the Opening Day of their 2024-25 season.

Turner was demoted to Forest's third string during preseason and Saturday's squad further confirms he remains out of Nuno Espírito Santo's plans. A transfer away from the club appears the only way the 30-year-old will have a shot at consistent playing time.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the 2023-24 season, Turner made 17 Premier League appearances for Forest across all competitions, but ultimately lost his starting spot in January to Belgian goalkeeper Matz Sels due to inconsistent form. Turner had just two league clean sheets during his time as a starter.

This summer, Forest also signed Brazilian goalkeeper Carlos Miguel from Corinthians. He was named to the bench on Saturday, with Sels starting in goal.

Turner started all three Copa America matches for the USMNT, but it wasn't enough to change Espirito Santo's plan.

Turner has until Aug. 31 to find a new club, or he might be remain without consistent playing time until the winter transfer window opens in January.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Turner has received interest abroad from clubs in the German Bundesliga and La Liga in Spain, according to CBS Sports.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR TURNER?

Forest take on Bournemouth Saturday, and follow it up with a clash against Southampton next weekend. Turner, meanwhile, will be working to find a new club during the remaining days of the transfer window.
