According to AS,Lillo, who initially worked at City between 2020 and 2022 and returned in 2023 for a second spell, will not be continuing with the club into the new season. His contract was not extended beyond its conclusion this summer, bringing his latest stint in Manchester to a close.

Lillo is not the only figure stepping away from City's coaching team. Carlos Vicens and Inigo Dominguez are also leaving the club, signalling a broader transition in Guardiola’s staff. The move is part of the revered coach's desire to refresh his inner circle with new perspectives and voices that can keep the team’s methodology sharp and evolving.

Vicens, who oversaw set-piece routines and had earned increasing responsibilities within the technical setup, has opted to pursue a managerial role of his own. He is set to take over at Portuguese side Braga, who recently ended their association with former boss Carlos Carvalhal.

Lillo’s bond with Guardiola is one rooted in history and mutual admiration. The connection dates back to 2006, when Guardiola concluded his playing days at Mexican side Dorados under Lillo’s tutelage. At that time, Guardiola was preparing for a future in coaching, and Lillo - already a respected figure who became La Liga’s youngest-ever coach at 29 -became a crucial mentor. Beyond his relationship with Guardiola, Lillo established deep respect among City’s squad, particularly with midfield anchor Rodri, one of the cornerstones of the team’s recent success.

With several senior staff members departing, Guardiola faces the challenge of rebuilding his backroom team ahead of a crucial summer.
