NYCFC fire manager Nick Cushing after Hudson River Derby playoff loss to rivals New York Red Bulls

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    Nick Cushing has been fired by New York City FC, the MLS club announced Tuesday. The Englishman acquired the interim tag in June 2022 before being promoted to full-time manager in November of that year.

    In the 2024 MLS Playoffs, he led the Pigeons to an Eastern Conference semifinal, where they fell to crosstown rivals RBNY 2-0 at Citi Field in Queens on Saturday.

    He posted a 40W-40L-27D record across all competitions while at the helm of the club.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Cushing is the 10th MLS manager to be fired in 2024, a league record. NYCFC, meanwhile, are now the fourth team with an vacancy across the league, joining Philadelphia Union, Atlanta United and Vancouver Whitecaps. Both Inter Miami and St. Louis CITY SC are without a head coach at the moment, too, but the Herons are reportedly set to announce Javier Mascherano as their new manager, and CITY are going with Swedish coach Olof Mellberg.

    "Whilst we are incredibly appreciative for all [Cushing] has done for the club, at this current time, we believe it’s best to move the team in a new direction as we plan for the 2025 season and beyond," sporting director David Lee said in a statement. "We would like to sincerely thank Nick for his contributions and wish him and his family all the very best in their future endeavors."
