    WHAT HAPPENED?

Gregg Berhalter has selected his squad for the upcoming January camp, which will culminate with a friendly against Slovenia on January 20 in San Antonio. The match will be the first of the USMNT's busy 2024 schedule but, because it does not fall on a FIFA date, the January camp will remain a chance for new faces to make a push towards a roster spot when the full team reconvenes later this year.

The squad is entirely composed of MLS players, with 17 of the 25 players called in seeking their first USMNT cap.

Our priority is on getting as many players as possible experience in important competitions, and this camp and the match against Slovenia will be extremely valuable in the evaluation process.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

It's a big year for the USMNT as the group faces its biggest tests ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The most notable test is this summer's Copa America, which will give the U.S. a chance to face South America's best on home soil.

That's not the only big tournament coming, though, as the U.S. also has the finals of the Nations League in the spring as well as the Olympics this summer, which will serve as a key chance for a group of U-23 players to prove themselves not just to Berhalter, but to potential European suitors as well.

    WHAT NEXT FOR USMNT?

Following this month's friendly, the U.S. will then turn their focus towards March's Concacaf Nations League semi-final. They'll face Jamaica in that match, with the U.S. looking to win a third consecutive Nations League title should they advance from that clash with the Reggae Boyz.
