  • City were furious with Simon Hooper
  • Refused to play advantage as Jack Grealish was clean through
  • Players surrounded referee
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The FA confirmed on Monday that it charged City with failing to control their players after the 3-3 draw with Tottenham. Players surrounded referee Simon Hooper after he failed to play advantage when Jack Grealish was sent through on goal by Erling Haaland in the final minute of injury time. Haaland was pictured screaming at Hooper, and he also tweeted after the game the letters 'WTF'. He could subsequently face a misconduct charge, although that is yet to be confirmed.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Haaland's furious reaction came amid a clash with Spurs midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, who scored Spurs' second goal at the Etihad. Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou also admitted that he felt his side had "got away with one" when Hooper blew his whistle as Grealish scampered unopposed towards goal.

  • WHAT THE FA SAID

The FA posted a statement, reading: "Manchester City have been charged with a breach of FA rule E20.1 after their players surrounded the match official during the Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday December 3 2023.

"It's alleged that, during the 94th minute of the fixture, the club failed to ensure their players do not behave in a way which is improper.

"Manchester City have until Thursday December 7 2023 to respond to the charge."

    WHAT NEXT FOR CITY?

City will await any further sanctions. A potential misconduct charge for Haaland could well see the striker banned, although that is unlikely to happen before the club's clash with Aston Villa on Wednesday.
