‘Something is going wrong’ - Cristian Romero aims dig at Spurs chairman Daniel Levy as centre-back claims club could compete for Premier League title ‘every year’

In an interview with Telemundo Deportes, Romero was posed a question about Spurs' squad depth and hinted that under-investment and poor decisions off the pitch are costing them on it. Romero admitted that they should be challenging for Premier League titles, but that "something is going wrong" at the north London club.

Romero said, per talkSPORT: "The truth is, I would say no comment, but... Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn't do well, strengthens again, and now they're seeing results. Those are the things to imitate. You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they realise it."

The defender continued: "The last few years, it’s always the same: first, the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it's always the same people responsible. Hopefully, they realise who the true responsible ones are, and we move forward because it’s a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year."

Seeing a contracted player come out with this kind of criticism of their club's operations is rare, and ultimately it serves as a pretty damning indictment of the Levy regime. It's not necessarily spending that is the issue, with Spurs having splashed £348m in the transfer market since Ange Postecoglou joined the club in the summer of 2023; but evidently, the way this money has been spent and the overall mood at the club remains a genuine problem.

The longer Spurs' trophy-less run continues, the more pressure Levy will be under. A large number of Tottenham fans are desperate to see the back of their chairman, and it's not just the supporters that have grown frustrated with his methods. Just weeks ago, former French international goalkeeper Hugo Lloris revealed a story that he believed highlights how the club is being held back by Levy's lack of a winner's mentality. It seems as though Romero feels the same way.
