When will Chelsea stop spending?! Blues add ex-Coventry star Viktor Gyokeres and Man Utd slayer Roony Bardghji to January transfer shortlist

Chelsea want to sign a new attacker in the January transfer window and have added Gyokeres and Bardghji to a shortlist that already contains Victor Osimhen and Ivan Toney, according to the Evening Standard. Gyokeres is in the midst of a prolific season for Sporting and has 15 goals in 18 matches, while Bardghji hit the headlines after scoring the winner for Copenhagen in a dramatic Champions League victory over Manchester United.

Chelsea have invested heavily in attacking players in recent windows, splashing out on Mykhailo Mudryk, Christopher Nkunku, Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson but have struggling in front of goal, scoring just 26 times in 16 Premier League matches. Mauricio Pochettino's team are also finding it tough going in the Premier League and currently sit 12th in the table.

Pochettino has hinted he wants reinforcements in January: "After the first half of the season, we need to check. That is the reality. If we are not receiving enough, maybe we need to do some movement. That is the thing to analyse with the sporting directors, to see if we can change this dynamic and improve in the second half of the season. We didn’t score [against Everton]. I think we dominated the game, we were the better side, but if you don’t score goals it is difficult to win the games. We were not aggressive enough in the last third.

"We need to be more aggressive. Then it's a massive assessment and when the transfer window opens, we will see what we can do. I don't say if I am going to ask for more or less players. It's to see if the perception matches the reality. We are missing something. We need to improve our reality."

Bardghji became the youngest player to score against United in the Champions League at the age of 17 years, 358 days when he netted in Copenhagen's 4-3 win over the Red Devils in November.

Pochettino still has four Premier League fixtures and a Carabao Cup clash with Newcastle to contest before the January transfer window opens and heads into the fixtures after poor defeats to Everton and United. The Blues may also be set to wave goodbye to some stars this winter, with up to seven players potentially set to be axed.
