  • WHAT HAPPENED?

UEFA has officially confirmed that Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs will be officiating the 2025 UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter. The clash will take place at Munich's Allianz Arena on Saturday, May 31. The game starts at 20:00 BST, with Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi acting as Kovacs' assistants.

Following on from the 2022 UEFA Conference League final between Roma and Feyenoord, and the 2024 UEFA Europa League final between Atalanta and Bayer Leverkusen, this is Kovacs' third significant UEFA final.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

At 40, Kovacs has significant experience officiating in Europe's biggest arenas. A FIFA-listed referee since 2010, he has already overseen seven Champions League matches this season, including PSG’s high-stakes round-of-16 second leg against Liverpool, where the French giants edged past the Reds on penalties.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

This will be the 70th Champions League final in history, and the first in Munich since 2012, when Chelsea faced Bayern Munich, a match the English side won on penalties. Kovacs becomes one of the very few referees to officiate all three major UEFA club competition finals.

WHAT NEXT FOR KOVACS, PSG & INTER?

All eyes will be on how Kovacs manages the enormity of the Champions League final between two tactically adept teams as he gets ready for the largest task of his officiating career. After years of disappointment, PSG has a chance to finally get their hands on the biggest prize of all. For Inter, meanwhile, the Munich final represents a chance to win the top European crown for the first time since 2010.
