Week 1 of the college football slate kicks into gear with a showdown between two former conference foes as Cal makes the trip north to Corvallis to lock horns with Oregon State on Saturday night. The Golden Bears and Beavers may not share league ties anymore, but there’s still plenty of intrigue when these programs meet on the gridiron.

Cal limped to a 6-7 mark last fall, capped off by a loss to UNLV in the LA Bowl that pushed them under the .500 mark. That setback gave the Golden Bears their fifth consecutive losing campaign—though in fairness, bowl defeats in back-to-back years were what ultimately dragged them below the break-even line.

Oregon State didn’t exactly set the world alight either, stumbling to a 5-7 record in Trent Bray’s debut season at the helm. Like Cal, the Beavers were hit hard by the transfer portal and are now in the midst of patching together a roster that has plenty of new faces.

Here, GOAL brings you everything you need to know about how to watch the Oregon State vs California NCAAF game, plus plenty more.

Oregon State vs California team news & key players

Oregon State Beavers team news

Oregon State leaned heavily on its rushing attack a year ago (29th nationally at 189.2 ypg) but struggled through the air (95th at 201.4 ypg). Their offense mustered 24.2 points per outing (95th), while the defense leaked 29.9 points (100th). The good news? The ground game is still in capable hands with Anthony Hankerson (1,082 yards, 15 TD) leading the way. Salahadin Allah is expected to complement him.

The receiver room is greener, though Trent Walker (901 yards, 2 TD), Darius Clemons, and Taz Reddicks provide some continuity. The bigger question mark may be on special teams, where Caleb Ojeda and Logan McCreery—both untested at the FBS level—are duking it out for the kicking job.

California Golden Bears team news

The Golden Bears did flash some offensive bite last season, ranking 37th in passing (258.6 yards per game), but their ground attack sputtered badly, sitting tied for 103rd nationally (121.5 ypg). On the scoreboard, Cal averaged 25.1 points (90th in FBS) while giving up just 22.3 (36th). With Mendoza gone, Ohio State transfer Devin Brown takes the reins after limited reps in Columbus, where he completed 11 of 20 throws for 114 yards and a touchdown.

The running back stable will be headlined by Brandon High Jr., with Kendrick Raphael and LJ Johnson Jr. also figuring into the mix. Out wide, Trond Grizzell is the top returner, but transfers like Jacob De Jesus (UNLV), QuaRon Adams (South Dakota), Mark Hamper (Montana), and tight end Landon Morris (Temple) will be counted on immediately. On special teams, Chase Meyer, who was nearly automatic at Tulsa in 2023, should provide stability at kicker.

The Beavers, meanwhile, endured plenty of upheaval of their own. Both quarterbacks from last year jumped ship—Gevani McCoy left for Temple while Ben Gulbranson headed to Stanford. That leaves Bray turning to former Duke starter Maalik Murphy, who threw for nearly 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns in Durham last season. Behind him is Gabarri Johnson, who saw limited action in 2024.
