His career numbers already speak volumes—5,420 passing yards, 39 touchdowns, and just 16 interceptions. Against Indiana State last week, he was nearly flawless, connecting on 19-of-20 passes for 270 yards and five touchdowns.

Mendoza has quickly built chemistry with junior wideout Omar Cooper Jr., who torched Indiana State for 207 yards and four touchdowns on 10 catches. Through three games this fall, Cooper has 13 receptions for 299 yards and four scores, pushing his career totals to 59 catches, 1,160 yards (a 19.7-yard average), and 13 touchdowns.

Illinois Fighting Illini team news

Illinois is led by redshirt senior Luke Altmyer, now in his third season at Champaign after transferring from Ole Miss. Altmyer has been sharp to start 2025, completing nearly 72% of his passes (56-of-78) for 709 yards and eight touchdowns. His top target has been senior receiver Hank Beatty, who has hauled in 19 receptions for 289 yards and a touchdown already this season. Beatty showcased his versatility against Duke, not only grabbing eight passes for 128 yards but also breaking off a 25-yard touchdown run. Now in his fourth year with the Illini, he’s totaled 54 catches, 673 yards, and a pair of scores.
