This Saturday, BYU hits the road for a showdown in Tucson against the Arizona Wildcats. The Cougars are riding high, undefeated and hungry to keep their conference title dreams alive, while Arizona is out for revenge after last season’s bitter defeat to BYU.

Arizona is eager to shake off the hangover from last year’s disappointing 4-8 campaign under Brent Brennan, which saw the Wildcats miss a bowl despite lofty preseason expectations.

After overhauling both the coaching staff and the roster, Brennan seems to have Arizona trending upward. The Wildcats opened the season with three straight statement wins over Hawaii, Weber State, and Kansas State, sending a message that they aren’t the same team that struggled in 2024.

Even after a hiccup at Iowa State, Arizona (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) quickly got back on track with a dominant 41-13 dismantling of Oklahoma State. That victory puts the Wildcats just two wins away from securing bowl eligibility—and they’re hoping to make a statement against BYU while doing it.

Here, GOAL brings you everything you need to know about how to watch the Arizona vs BYU NCAAF game, plus plenty more.

Arizona vs BYU news & key players

Arizona Wildcats team news

Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita has been a revelation, throwing for 1,341 yards with 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions, completing 64.6% of his passes. The Wildcats rank 22nd in the nation in passing offense (286.2 yards/game) and 49th in scoring (33.2 points/game), with deep threats Jayin Whatley (316 yards, 3 TDs) and Tre Spivey (143 yards, 4 TDs) keeping defenses honest. Running back Ismail Mahdi anchors the ground game with 382 yards on 64 carries, helping Arizona average 430.0 total yards per game despite being just 87th in rushing.

Defensively, the Wildcats have quietly been elite. Arizona ranks 10th in total defense (244.8 yards/game), 11th against the pass (147.2 yards/game), and 19th in scoring defense (15.6 points/game). They’ve forced 11 turnovers and allowed only seven touchdowns all season.

The secondary duo of Jay’Vion Cole and Dalton Johnson has grabbed four picks and contributed 28 tackles, while the front seven has added 10 sacks and 28 tackles for loss. Arizona’s defense also shines on third downs, limiting opponents to a 25.7% conversion rate and holding four of five foes under 300 yards total.

Coach Brent Brennan will look to stretch BYU’s defensive front with tempo and vertical shots, but protecting Fifita against a Cougar line that’s top 20 in sacks will be key. If Mahdi can keep BYU honest and Arizona wins the turnover battle, the Wildcats have the firepower to steal this one in Provo. With Houston and Utah waiting on the schedule, this is a defining clash for their Big 12 championship aspirations.

BYU Cougars team news

Quarterback Bear Bachmeier has been nothing short of electric for BYU, piling up 1,048 passing yards with seven touchdowns and just a single interception while completing 68.7% of his throws. Add 206 rushing yards and five scores on the ground, and BYU has a genuine dual-threat weapon under center.

The Cougars are humming offensively, ranking 27th nationally in total yards (451.8/game), 15th on the ground (234.0/game), and 21st in scoring (38.4 points/game). LJ Martin leads the rushing attack with 490 yards and three touchdowns, while Chase Roberts provides a deep-play spark, averaging 19.8 yards per reception with three scores.

On the defensive side, BYU has been a fortress. The Cougars rank eighth nationally in total defense (239.6 yards/game), sixth in scoring defense (12.2 points/game), and 12th against the pass (147.4 yards/game). They’ve allowed a mere six touchdowns all season and are limiting opponents to just 4.2 yards per play. The secondary, anchored by Evan Johnson and Faletau Satuala, has snagged three interceptions and defended 15 passes, while the front seven has racked up 10 sacks for 96 yards lost.

BYU’s stingy red zone defense allows opponents to score on just 75% of trips, and their ball-control approach has them pacing the nation at 33:08 time of possession per game. Coach Kalani Sitake will lean heavily on Martin and Bachmeier’s versatility to dominate the line of scrimmage and keep Arizona’s offense off the field. Win the trenches and limit Noah Fifita’s big-play potential, and BYU stays on their unbeaten path ahead of a brutal slate with Utah, Iowa State, and Texas Tech looming.
