Carolina Panthers vs Pittsburgh Steelers projected roster & injury news

Carolina Panthers team news

For Carolina, head coach Dave Canales has inherited a major rebuilding project. The Panthers’ offense has sputtered this preseason despite giving the starters some run. Young QB Bryce Young had a tough outing in Houston, going 0-for-2 and taking a sack, though he did flash promise with a touchdown strike in the opener against Cleveland.

Backup Andy Dalton is battling a muscle issue and saw only four pass attempts before exiting last week, forcing Jack Plummer to take over. While Plummer went 10-of-14 for 83 yards, his two interceptions highlighted Carolina’s ongoing offensive struggles.

Defensively, Carolina was a nightmare last season, becoming just the fourth team in NFL history to surrender over 3,000 rushing yards. Losing star defensive lineman Derrick Brown to a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 was a huge blow, but his return — paired with the offseason signing of Bobby Brown III — should go a long way toward shoring up their run defense.

Pittsburgh Steelers team news

The Steelers are coming off a 10-7 campaign that featured a turbulent quarterback carousel with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, both of whom are now gone.

Their hopes this season rest on the shoulders of 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers, though it’s highly unlikely the veteran will see the field in Charlotte. That leaves backup reps to sort out: Skylar Thompson got the most action last week, finishing 10-of-15 for 113 yards but tossing a costly interception.

Mason Rudolph chipped in with a touchdown and a pick on limited snaps, while Logan Woodside also threw an interception in what was a turnover-filled showing for the QB room. Rookie Will Howard, a sixth-rounder out of Ohio State, remains sidelined with a broken finger and is expected to miss the preseason entirely.

There is, however, plenty of optimism about Pittsburgh’s revamped roster. The defense added star corner Jalen Ramsey in a blockbuster trade that sent safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to Miami, while the offense gained another weapon in tight end Jonnu Smith, joining forces with Rodgers, DK Metcalf, and Pat Freiermuth. A year ago, Pittsburgh was stout against the run (4.1 yards per carry allowed, 11th in rushing defense) but vulnerable through the air, finishing just 23rd against the pass.
