Chelsea are back - and so is Cole Palmer. That was the obvious conclusion to draw after their thrilling 3-2 London derby win over Fulham on Monday, which saw Xabi Alonso make the ideal start to his managerial reign.
Palmer ran the show with a goal and an assist, while Joao Pedro and £117-million ($160m) summer signing Morgan Rogers also got on the scoresheet. The trio's instant chemistry bodes well for Chelsea's chances of drastically improving on last season's woeful 10th-placed Premier League finish; they will be extremely difficult to stop for any defence on this form.
However, any fans who are suddenly dreaming of a title challenge need to wake up. Scoring goals won't be a problem for Alonso's side, but the overall performance at Craven Cottage suggests that conceding them will be; Fulham created enough chances to at least come away with a draw.
Expectations at Chelsea should remain tempered for now. Unless more major business is conducted before the summer window slams shut, qualifying for the Champions League is realistically the best they can hope for.
