This Saturday, September 13, SHI Stadium will host an intriguing early-season matchup as the Rutgers Scarlet Knights take on the Norfolk State Spartans at 3:30 p.m. Both teams enter riding the momentum of Week 1 wins: Rutgers cruised past Miami (OH) 45-17, while Norfolk State edged out Virginia State 34-31 in overtime.

Rutgers comes in as a clear favorite, looking to pad their confidence ahead of a tough Big Ten showdown with Iowa next Friday. The Scarlet Knights are eager to use this contest as a chance to fine-tune their game plan and build consistency on both sides of the ball.

However, Norfolk State isn’t expected to roll over. After a disappointing 4-8 campaign last year, the Spartans shook things up by hiring Michael Vick, the former NFL star and Virginia Tech standout, to breathe new life into the program. Vick brings a dynamic approach, and his team will be looking to pull off a statement upset in just his second game at the helm.

One of the keys to Norfolk State’s strategy lies in their dual-quarterback system. Otto Kuhns, the more traditional passer, has seen the majority of snaps over the first two weeks, while backup Israel Carter adds a dynamic scrambling element when on the field.

Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano admitted during his press conference that game-planning for the Spartans can be tricky, given how drastically their offensive scheme shifts depending on which quarterback is under center. With that in mind, this game offers a fascinating clash of schemes: Rutgers aiming for a controlled, dominant performance, and Norfolk State trying to inject unpredictability under Vick’s guidance.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs Norfolk State Spartans team news & key players

Rutgers Scarlet Knights team news

Athan Kaliakmanis carved up Miami's defense, going 26-of-36 through the air for 259 yards and four touchdowns. Antwan Raymond provided balance in the backfield, racking up 82 yards and two scores on 13 carries. Out wide, Ian Strong was the go-to target, hauling in nine catches for 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns to headline the Scarlet Knights' aerial attack.

The focus has to be on cleaning up defensive mistakes that have cropped up in the early season, eliminating blown coverages, improving pursuit angles, and consistently pressuring the quarterback. If the defense can execute error-free football, it could bode well for the season ahead, especially since head coach Greg Schiano has described the unit as a "work in progress." Offensively, the Scarlet Knights should aim to maintain their dominance from the first two weeks, sustaining drives and keeping the chains moving.

If Rutgers can accomplish both, they should be in a position to build a sizable halftime lead, allowing the starters to rest and backups to gain valuable reps. That could open the door for the Scarlet Knights’ potential quarterback of the future, AJ Surace, who serves as the backup to Kaliakmanis, to see his first meaningful snaps at the collegiate level.

Norfolk State Spartans team news

Based on the snap distributions from Norfolk State’s first two games, it wouldn’t be surprising to see both Otto Kuhns and Israel Carter get significant reps on Saturday. Rutgers’ defense has shown some vulnerability against mobile quarterbacks so far this season, so the Spartans may try to exploit that with their dual-quarterback approach.

Against Virginia, Norfolk State quarterback Kuhns turned in a steady performance, completing 13 of 20 throws for 173 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the ground, Kevon King paced the Spartans with nine carries for 63 yards, while Jaylen Laudermilk chipped in three rushes for 59 yards, including a score. Kam’Ryn Thomas once again proved reliable in the passing game, snagging five receptions for 82 yards.
