Hugely worrying scenes as Luton captain Tom Lockyer collapses on pitch & paramedics rush to his aid as Premier League game with Bournemouth called off

Lockyer collapsed to the turf in the second half of Luton's Premier League clash with Bournemouth on Saturday in a worrying incident. The match was promptly halted to allow for urgent medical attention, while the players left the pitch. The captain was subsequently taken off on a stretcher and applauded by both sets of supporters.

Bournemouth's club doctor confirmed that Lockyer was "alert and responsive" after being strechered off. However, there will be concern for the captain who also collapsed on the pitch during Luton's Championship play-off win over Coventry City in May. Lockyer then underwent treatment for an irregular heartbeat but returned for the start of the Premier League season with Luton.

The match between Luton and Bournemouth was then abandoned after Lockyer was taken off the pitch with the scoreline level at 1-1. The Premier League confirmed the news in a statement: "The Premier League match between Bournemouth and Luton has been abandoned due to a player medical incident. Our thoughts are with Tom Lockyer and all players involved in today’s match."

The players came out to applaud the spectators after confirmation that the game had been called off. An emotional-looking Rob Edwards also walked around the pitch and clapped fans on a difficult afternoon for the club.
