Win a trophy, rejoin Spurs & break Alan Shearer's record? Ex-Tottenham star discusses possible Premier League return for prolific Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane

England captain Kane took the decision to end his association with Spurs in the summer of 2023. He had boasted career-long ties to the north London outfit when deciding to spread his wings and step out of a professional comfort zone. A prolific record with the Premier League giants saw him become their all-time leading scorer, with 280 goals recorded through 435 appearances.

Of those strikes, 213 came in the Premier League – placing him 47 efforts behind Shearer on the all-time list. Kane headed to Germany in a bid to bring his long wait for major silverware to a close, but could he be tempted to return to his homeland in pursuit of individual records once a trophy duck is broken?

When that question was put to Carr, the former Tottenham defender – speaking in association with Buy WoW Gold – told GOAL: "No, I don’t think so. I wouldn’t imagine so. Harry Kane is doing it in Germany now, his goal record is scary. People comment on him not having the legs as much anymore, but what he brings to the team is that you know he is going to score goals. It’s about having the right players around him that have pace. He’s never going to be the quickest player in the world, but he’s a goalscorer.

"To go back there, I don’t think so. I wouldn’t be surprised if he stayed at Bayern. Hopefully this year he does get something – they win the league or the Champions League. He deserves it. He’s had some career without any trophies. He has shown it again in another league, banging goals in, and he’s phenomenal. I don’t see him going back. At his age, the Premier League gets faster and faster, I don’t think it would suit him. But the point is he will always score goals, it doesn’t matter where he is."

Pressed further on whether the Shearer record could act as added incentive for Kane as he mulls over any future options, Carr went on to say: "I played with Shearer as well and if he’d have stayed in the Premier League, he would have got it. He would have beaten that record. But to stay in the Premier League, would he have beaten it at Tottenham or would he have had to move? Who knows. Would Tottenham want to sell him to the Man Citys of this world? No. I think that’s why he ended up going to Germany.

"It’s a pity because he was on track to beat that record. There are not many players that could do that – maybe [Erling] Haaland. But do players stay there long enough? It’s quite rare because there are too many offers on the table for these players because they are so good. There are not many out there who you can rely on for goals. It would be nice, but could Spurs afford him? He’s not cheap. It’s not one of [Daniel] Levy’s business things to sell like that and then bring them back. He’s getting older as well, a lot of games, and I don’t see him going back there."

Carr also believes that winning one piece of silverware will not be enough for Kane, with players of his ilk wanting to be as successful as possible before calling it a day. The ex-Republic of Ireland international added: "The percentages at Bayern are way, massively higher than teams in England. All the teams in England can spend – mid-level teams will spend money as well. Bayern, in Germany, don’t have that as much. You have got the big boys but outside of that… Bayern dominated for years and I don’t see them not winning the league this year. In the Champions League, they have a good record in that as well.

"If he got something, it will just kick him on to win more there. He deserves trophies – whether it is the Premier League, the Bundesliga, whatever. He’s had an unbelievable career to have no trophies. Some good players have had unbelievable careers with no trophies, but you want to see one. He has all of the records as a goalscorer, man of the matches, hat-tricks, but it will be nice to have some trophies on the mantel at the end of it."

Kane has helped Bayern to the top of the Bundesliga table this season, while also picking up positive results in Europe, and is desperate to get his hands on a trophy of some description after ending his debut campaign at the Allianz Arena empty handed.
