Following the game, the veteran defender took to Instagram to explain his actions. He posted an image on his story with the caption: "Every professional athlete will always be pushing themselves harder and thinking they can do better. In a highly competitive league, it’s the details that secure 3 points. I just didn’t want to spend New Year’s like I did Christmas, sorry”. 🤪

Silva turns 40 next September but he remains an indispensable part of the Blues first team. The Brazilian has failed to start just two of his side's Premier League games this season, most recently receiving a rare rest when starting on the bench for his side's 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on December 27.

Silva's Stamford Bridge contract expires at the end of the season and he has been linked with a move back to boyhood club Fluminense to conclude his career. However, recent reports have suggested that he may end up sticking around in London for another year. Not only is he still an important player for Mauricio Pochettino, his family - including wife Belle - are understood to be settled in the English capital.
