  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Rangers parted ways with manager Philippe Clement after the team's 2-0 loss to St. Mirren in February. Gerrard, who left Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq in January, was tipped to return to his former club, but the Scottish side announced Barry Ferguson as their interim boss for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

After losing out to arch-rivals Celtic in the title race, Rangers have now stepped up their search for a new permanent manager and have reportedly kept Gerrard in their long list of head coach candidates, according to The Telegraph. The report adds that the club are also considering names like former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil, ex-Luton Town manager Rob Edwards and Russell Martin, who had a loan spell at Rangers as a player before managing at MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton. There are no favourites in the race as the Scottish club wants to carefully analyse before making their final call.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Gerrard had earlier managed the Gers for three years between 2018 and 2021, and in his final season at Ibrox, he helped the club win the Scottish Premiership. He put together a solid unit, which went on to reach the Europa League final a season later.
