Steven Gerrard's Rangers return put on hold amid financial issues as Scottish giants name interim boss following Philippe Clement sacking

Rangers decided to part ways with manager Philippe Clement after the team's 2-0 loss to St. Mirren last Saturday, which saw them fall 13 points behind arch-rivals and league leaders Celtic. A day after Clement was relieved of his duties, former club captain Barry Ferguson was announced as their new interim head coach. The official statement from the club read: "Rangers Football Club can today announce Hall of Fame member and former club captain, Barry Ferguson, is to become Head Coach of our men’s first team until the end of the season."

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard was linked with a move back to Rangers last month after he left Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq. However, according to talkSPORT, the former England star will not be able to take up a new job at least until April due to tax laws in Saudi Arabia and the UK. If he returned to a job before April, he would forced to pay taxes on all of his earnings between April 2024 and January 2025. UK tax laws also require citizens, who are working overseas, to remain outside the country for the full financial year.

Since leaving the Middle East, Gerrard has been linked with multiple clubs in the lower divisions, including Blackburn Rovers. It remains to be seen if Rangers would consider re-appointing the 44-year-old as their next permanent manager ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The Gers will be back in action on Wednesday under Ferguson as they take on Kilmarnock in a Scottish Premiership clash.
