Steve McCLaren springs a surprise by leaving Man Utd coaching staff - and taking the Jamaica national team job

The Jamaican Football Federation confirmed that they have appointed 63-year-old McClaren as their new manager on Wednesday. The English coach replaces Heimir Hallgrimsson at the helm, who left the job after the Reggae Boyz's disappointing group stage exit from Copa America 2024.

It was earlier reported that McClaren did not travel with Erik ten Hag and the Red Devils squad to the United States for their pre-season tour as he was not fit to make the journey because he recently underwent surgery on his foot.

Since the addition of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake to the Dutch manager's coaching staff, the Englishman's role was altered from assistant manager to senior first-team coach.

The former England boss' first assignment in charge of Jamaica will be during the September international break as the Caribbean nation take on Cuba and Honduras in back-to-back CONCACAF Nations League clashes.
