Ryan Porteous' misery compounded! Scotland defender banned for both of Tartan Army's remaining group games after brutal red card against Germany

Following a decision from UEFA's Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB), Porteous will miss the rest of the Euro 2024 group stage against Switzerland and Hungary due to being penalised for "serious rough play". It could even mean the end of his tournament should Scotland fail to progress to the knockout rounds without him.

The Watfod centre-back was dismissed in the final moments of the first half of Scotland's 5-1 defeat to Germany following a dangerous lunge on Ilkay Gundogan in the penalty area. The incident wasn't punished in real time but was pulled up for a VAR check, resulting in Porteous being given his marching orders.

A UEFA statement read: "The CEDB has decided to suspend Scottish Football Association player, Mr. Ryan Porteous, for a total of two (2) UEFA representative team competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible, for serious rough play."

The Scottish Football Association has also been fined €5,625 (£4,752/$6,031) for objects thrown onto the pitch by fans during the heavy defeat in Munich.

Realistically, Scotland will qualify for the last 16 if they take four points from their next two games. It may be possible with just three, although that would still leave them vulnerable to early elimination. No Scottish team has ever progressed beyond the group stage of a men's World Cup or European Championship in 11 previous tournament appearances, so history is on the line.
