    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guimaraes had been heavily linked with an exit from Newcastle this summer, however no team chose to activate his release clause which expired in June, believed to be worth around £100 million ($128m) The 26-year-old still has four years remaining on his contract at St James' Park.

  • WHAT GUIMARAES SAID

Posting on social media, Guimaraes wrote: "I'm very happy to be starting another season with this club that has done so much for me since my first day here. I'm glad to be back and more prepared than ever to have a brilliant season and to help Newcastle reach the highest possible position!

"Another dream has come true! Being the captain of this team is everything I've always dreamed of but never imagined! We're in this together, and I'm sure I'll be more dedicated than ever to this badge."

WHAT NEXT FOR GUIMARAES AND MAN CITY?

City continue to remain admirers of Guimaraes, with Pep Guardiola's side still expected to strengthen in midfield this summer. However, City could instead focus their attention on Euro 2024 star Dani Olmo, who is also being heavily pursued by Barcelona. Guimaraes, meanwhile, could be named team captain of Newcastle if Kieran Trippier leaves, with club skipper Jamaal Lascelles sidelined with a long-term injury.
