Joe Gomez facing uncertain Liverpool future as failed £45m transfer comes to light

Gomez looked set to join Newcastle in a £45m deal, with Gordon heading the other way for £75m ($96m). The transfer was highly influenced by the Magpies' need to meet the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules before the June 30 deadline, while the Daily Mail report that Gomez was also happy at the chance of regular football in his preferred centre-back position at St James' Park.

Ultimately, Newcastle pulled the plug on the Gomez-Gordon exchange as they were able to meet PSR regulations without offloading their star winger. Yankuba Minteh was sold to Brighton while Elliot Anderson joined Nottingham Forest. As such, Gomez now faces an uncertain future as Liverpool have made clear they are open to selling the England international, and there is interest in his signature.

The Mail's report claims Gomez has interest from Saudi Arabia, although the 27-year-old's experience and versatility will make him an attractive option for a number of clubs seeking to bolster their defence.

Gomez remains on holiday after being part of England's European Championship squad. He will report back to Liverpool's training ground in Kirkby next week, where he will link up with new boss Arne Slot for the first time.
