James Milner 'getting flashbacks' to Jurgen Klopp under new Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler as veteran backs young manager to thrive in Premier League

Brighton & Hove Albion made a groundbreaking decision by appointing Hurzeler as their new head coach, a move that has set the football world abuzz. At just 31 years old, Hurzeler has become the youngest full-time manager in Premier League history, an achievement that underscores the club’s willingness to embrace youthful dynamism and fresh ideas.

Hurzeler's rapid rise to prominence is no fluke; it is a testament to his remarkable work ethic and tactical ingenuity, traits that were on full display during his tenure at FC St Pauli as he guided them to the Bundesliga 2 title in the most recent season. Winning 20 out of 34 matches, Hurzeler’s side was a model of consistency, blending tactical discipline with a motivational approach that brought out the best in his players.

Milner, who has experienced considerable success at Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp, has already drawn parallels between Hurzeler and his former manager as he couldn't help but notice the similarities between Hurzeler’s style and the approach that made Klopp one of the most respected managers in the world.

“I’m getting flashbacks,” Milner remarked with a smile during an interview with Sky Sports.

"There is a good mix of the last manager [Roberto De Zerbi], who was build-up orientated, but maybe a bit of Jurgen Klopp thrown in. In terms of how we defend especially, the focus is on high intensity, counter-pressing and quick reactions to turnovers. The manager has put his own stamp and intensity on things, he wants us to play front foot with and without the ball."

Hurzeler's approach is reminiscent of Klopp’s famous gegenpressing, a tactic that relies on swift pressure after losing possession, aiming to regain the ball high up the pitch and catch opponents off guard.

"A few of the sessions we've done and a few tactical ideas have been familiar, which is great," Milner continued. "I'm very familiar with the Klopp style, and hopefully that means I can help some of the boys with a few of the defensive patterns. I'm pretty comfortable with it, and can help translate.

"I get to learn from a new manager. I'm learning every day. I had a fantastic time under Roberto last year but now it's a fresh start, with some positive changes. I've been really impressed with the manager so far, I'm excited to work with him."

The familiarity with De Zerbi could prove invaluable as Brighton’s squad adapts to Hurzeler’s methods. They won all four of their pre-season friendlies and look poised to make an effective start to their Premier League campaign when they take on Everton at Goodison Park on August 17.
