'What the hell do we do?' - Jadon Sancho leaves Man Utd asking many questions as Rio Ferdinand wonders how Red Devils should deal with winger's future

Discussing Sancho's future on the latest podcast to his FIVE YouTube channel, Ferdinand called on United's new decision-makers to get to the bottom of why Sancho has been able to thrive on loan at Dortmund but had always struggled to perform consistently since moving to Old Trafford in 2021.

A public falling out with United manager Erik ten Hag in August led to Sancho being banished from the first-team and temporarily escaping to Dortmund in January. But even in 82 appearances prior to that, he had been a shadow of the player who impressed in Germany between 2018 and 2021 and commanded a big transfer fee. Since returning to Dortmund, his form has improved after a mixed start, culminating in a star turn as the club beat Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final last week.

Ferdinand said: "I saw 'cage' Sancho again. All the guys and their teams [at United] will be going: 'What the hell do we do with this kid, Sancho?'…Because he's played the Champions League semi-final against a talented bunch of PSG players and was outstanding, and was the best player on the pitch.

"Are we going to let that go? What they have to do is go: 'What are the issues here?' What's going on behind the scenes at Man United? Is it him? Can he not play in the Premier League at this pace and intensity? Is he not athletic enough? Mentally, has there been an issue? Or, was it just the timing in his life? Was there stuff going on behind the scenes we're unaware of that we need to find out about as to why he was maybe unhappy and it was affecting his performances? Or, was it the manager who just couldn't get it out of him?' All these questions need to be answered. I'm not saying what's what, I'm just it all out on the table. But INEOS's job is to find out the answers to all those questions and then make a decision, because there is no doubt there's talent here. But why hasn't he done that in a Man United shirt? That's the biggest question that needs answering."

At this moment in time, where Sancho will be playing in 2024-25 is unclear. Sancho's preference is reportedly thought to be staying at Dortmund, but that could be beyond the Bundesliga side's budget, while his United future may depend on whether or not Ten Hag remains at the club next season.
