Explained: Why Ruben Amorim has benched Alejandro Garnacho for Man Utd's Europa League clash with FCSB amid Chelsea and Napoli transfer talk

Ahead of United's final Europa League group phase match against their Romanian opponents, head coach Amorim decided against starting Garnacho - who could leave the club in the coming days - in his starting XI. Now it has become clear why on Thursday.

Former Sporting CP boss Amorim explained before the contest that a number of players had been ill in the past few days, including the Argentine international. As a result, the 20-year-old is among the substitutes as a precaution.

He told TNT Sports: "Some players like Garnacho were sick during the week and Amad [Diallo] was on the limit, he is playing every minute so we have to try to keep the players fit and the other ones are prepared to win the game."

For a while it looked like the Napoli and Chelsea-linked 20-year-old would leave Old Trafford but time is running out for him to depart the Red Devils before the transfer window deadline on February 3.
