  • WHAT HAPPENED?

As Aston Villa chase Champions League qualification, Martinez, who recently appeared to wave goodbye to the Villa Park faithful, was sent off in the final game of the season against Manchester United. The Argentine sprinted out of his goal after Rasmus Hojlund was sent through and cleaned the striker out, with the referee subsequently showing him a straight red card.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Martinez has been so consistent for Villa in recent years but he has been linked with a move to both Barcelona and, ironically, United this summer. Prior to his red card, he had only missed one game this season, doing so through injury.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The straight red card is Martinez's first of his senior career, and may well sour his departure from the club, if he does indeed leave. His contract runs until 2029, so Villa are likely to receive a big fee regardless.

    WHAT NEXT?

It remains to be seen if Villa will countenance Martinez's potential exit, with the goalkeeper having seemingly waved goodbye to supporters in the club's final home game of the season against Tottenham. The 32-year-old has played 211 times for the Lions since joining from Arsenal in 2020.
