    THE BIGGER PICTURE

San Jose sits at the bottom of MLS heading into matchday 11, with a mere three points. They're 1-0-8 (WDL) through nine games this season and have the worst goal-differential in the league at -11. However, with Lopez in the mix now, their fortunes could change.

The Argentine had seven goals and five assists in his two years with Godoy Cruz. The numbers might not be flashy, but as the nephew of Argentine great Diego Maradona, there will be high expectations for him in Southern California.

  • WHAT THE EARTHQUAKES SAID

Earthquakes general manager Chris Leitch said: “We’re excited to announce the signing of a top-level player like Hernán López and welcome him to San Jose. To bring in a dynamic central playmaker of his caliber for what will be the prime of his career demonstrates that we are willing to invest at a higher level than ever before. He not only fits the mold for our long-term project but will make an immediate impact when he steps on the field.”
