Inter Miami trailed early during their visit to Philadelphia, before seeing Julian Gressel restore parity two minutes into the second half. The Herons then had David Ruiz and Tomas Aviles sent off before snatching a 94th-minute winner through Leo Afonso.

Co-owner Beckham is among those to have been left singing the praises of a spirited squad that have shown that they can cope with Messi and pull together in order to overcome any challenge. Manchester United and England legend Beckham has said on social media: “Great comeback win. Fight until the very end.”

Inter Miami, who are set to see Messi sit out several more games before returning to Chase Stadium, remain at the top of the MLS Eastern Conference – with 38 points collected from 19 fixtures – and will be back in action on Wednesday when playing host to the Columbus Crew.
