Why Christopher Nkunku is reluctant to be involved in Chelsea's potential swap transfer for RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons - revealed

Chelsea have offered Nkunku to RB Leipzig as part of their pursuit of Simons. The BBC have reported that the French forward is reluctant to make the move as he is determined to play in the Champions League next season. However, The Athletic have submitted a conflicting report that Nkunku may be open to a move to RB Leipzig.

Chelsea are actively reshaping their attack and have offered multiple players, including Carney Chukwuemeka and Tyrique George, in an effort to sign Simons. The Blues want to offload attackers to create space and funds for new arrivals, with a deal for Alejandro Garnacho also close to being completed. Leipzig’s are said to remain open to any straightforward deal worth €70 million (£60.5m), however, RB Leipzig have ruled Nkunku out of the deal due to his €20m-per-year wages, as per Simon Phillips.

Nkunku is admired at Chelsea after his positive performances at the Club World Cup, but he has yet to secure a consistent starting role. His career ambitions and high wages present obstacles to a Bundesliga return. This situation highlights the difficulties clubs face when moving on top earners in the transfer market.

Chelsea must decide whether to meet Leipzig’s €70m asking price for Simons without involving Nkunku. Negotiations are set to continue as the transfer window edges towards its close. Unless a Champions League club makes a move, Nkunku is expected to remain at Stamford Bridge.
