Chloe Kelly accuses Man City of 'briefing journalists against me' after Lionesses star seals loan to WSL rivals Arsenal

The England international was on the move late in the winter window, with a return to north London completed before the latest deadline passed. Kelly is a graduate of the Gunners’ youth system and made her senior bow for the club before linking up with Everton.

Kelly joined City in 2020 and became a European Championship winner with the Lionesses while taking in over 100 appearances in Manchester. She fell out of favour this season as her contract began to wind down.

The 27-year-old forward has already spoken out against City's attempts to "dictate" her future, with a frustrating situation for all concerned impacting her "mental well-being". Kelly has now aimed more barbs at the club after heading through the exits.

In a statement posted on her Instagram account, Kelly said: "So disappointed to find out tonight that people at the club are briefing journalists against me if I am to sign at a club before the window shuts.

"They’ve called reporters to assassinate my character and tried to plant negative stories about me in the football media, of which is false accusations. Women should look after each other and build each other up, not shoot them down to protect their employers. To those responsible, I am disappointed in this. As said in my previous statement, I just want to find happiness again."

While taking shots at those behind the scenes at City, Kelly added in a message for supporters: "City fans, I am very grateful for you all, thank you for welcoming me with open arms and the memories shared. And to my team-mates you are all amazing. Thank you for your support."

Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers has said of getting Kelly on board: "Chloe is an exciting attacking player and will be a great addition to our squad as we approach the second half of the season. She’s direct and explosive, with huge natural talent and ability. We’re all looking forward to working with Chloe as an Arsenal player in the coming months." The Gunners sit fourth in the WSL table at present, 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea but only one behind City.
