Stengs was once heralded as one of the Netherlands' most talented youngsters. One of the top stars of the AZ academy, Stengs broke through during the 2018-19 season, going on to score 24 goals in 113 appearances for his boyhood club. He then made a reported €10 million ($10.92M) move to Nice, spending one full season in France, scoring one goal and adding one assist in 24 matches played. He would then go on a loan to Antwerp in the Belgian Pro League.

He returned to his native Holland for the 2023-24 season where, under now-Liverpool manager Arne Slot, he won the KNVB Cup. Stengs contributed six goals and 12 assists that season. Earlier this month, he lifted the Johan Cruyff Shield.
