CBF responds to claim Brazil will wear red kit for first time in 106 years at 2026 World Cup with Jordan logo

Popular football culture website Footy Headlines caused a stir this week by claiming that Nike will produce a new red away kit for Brazil for the next World Cup with the famous Michael Jordan logo replacing their customary swoosh. This would mark the second collaboration between Brazil and the Jordan brand after a special edition shirt was made in 2016, which was predominantly black with red included on the shoulders but was never worn by the national team.

Brazil have not worn a red kit in 106 years, with the new designs supposedly inspired by the strip produced for their Copa America campaigns between 1917 and 1919. The Selecao have played in yellow home kits since 1954, when they made the switch from white jerseys, and the current squad plays in blue in away games.

The Brazilian football federation (CBF) has now released a statement distancing itself from the new red kit report, which reads: "The recently released images of alleged Brazil kits for the 2026 World Cup are not official. Neither the CBF nor Nike have formally released details about the national team's new line. We reaffirm our commitment to our agreement, and can state that the new kit collection for the World Cup will still be created together with Nike."

Brazil still have some work to do to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in North America, with top stars such as Vinicius Junior and Raphinha having underperformed in recent matches. The Selecao are sitting fourth in the CONMEBOL rankings after 14 games and still have fixtures to come against Ecuador, Paraguay, Chile and Bolivia, with only the top six guaranteed passage to next year's tournament.
