Barcelona avoid most severe punishment over financial issues as UEFA set to issue fine after meeting between presidents Joan Laporta and Aleksandr Ceferin

Barcelona find themselves in hot water with UEFA over a breach of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations, and this time, escaping without a significant financial penalty appears unlikely. According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t AS), the European football governing body initially proposed a €60 million fine. However, that figure could be reduced to €15 million, provided the club adheres strictly to FFP regulations going forward.

President Joan Laporta met with UEFA chief Aleksander Ceferin during the Nations League final in Munich to negotiate a resolution. The dispute centers on UEFA's classification of Barcelona’s financial levers, such as selling future TV rights. While La Liga considers these transactions as operating income, UEFA views them as profits from intangible assets, which are not valid under Financial Fair Play rules. Barcelona defended their actions by arguing to UEFA that La Liga had previously permitted asset sales as a temporary financing solution, citing the club’s inability to raise capital and their reluctance to burden members financially.

This isn’t the first time Barcelona have faced disciplinary action over similar financial maneuvers. The club was previously fined €500,000 for the sale of 25% of its TV rights, although that penalty was later reduced following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

If the Catalans fail to comply with UEFA's regulations and do not pay the penalty on time, they could face difficulties in registering new arrivals such as Joan Garcia. The final verdict by UEFA is yet to be announced. The Blaugrana will be awaiting the decision with bated breath, in hopes that they do not face further difficulties with registrations or other sporting sanctions.
