Unknown Stars GFXGOAL

Serhou Guirassy, Savinho and the little-known players making superb starts to the season

If you were asked to select the European player of the season so far, few very obvious names would immediately come to mind. Jude Bellingham, certainly. Erling Haaland, Harry Kane and Lautaro Martinez perhaps too.

It's only natural to gravitate towards these types of names. As much as the internet has drastically reduced the mystery of football across the continent, if you are not religiously following the action away from the Premier League, it's easy for certain players' performances to slip through the cracks.

For instance, did you realise that Europe's top scorer is not Haaland, Kane or Kylian Mbappe - but a journeyman striker currently at Stuttgart? And have you been keeping track of Manchester City's next prospect, who's currently tearing it up in La Liga?

Below, GOAL has collated a list of players like this, who's flying starts might have passed you by so far this season...

  • Serhou Guirassy Stuttgart 07102023Getty

    Serhou Guirassy (Stuttgart)

The 2023-24 season is already guaranteed to be the most prolific of Guirassy's career - and he's only played seven games! The Stuttgart frontman is well on track to beat the likes of Mbappe and Haaland to the European Golden Shoe, despite experiencing a fairly meandering career at the top level prior to his move back to Germany last summer.

Guirassy has registered a ridiculous 13 Bundesliga goals so far, firing his side - who had to navigate a relegation play-off last season - into genuine European contention. Ironically, he once turned down a move to Chelsea. How the Blues could do with him right now...

    Victor Boniface (Bayer Leverkusen)

Guirassy is not the only African striker ripping up the Bundesliga this season. Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen have earned a lot of plaudits for their attractive playing style, and spearheading everything going forward has been Boniface.

The striker has had no issue adjusting to the step up in quality since arriving from Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer, netting a trio of braces in his first five games. His form has been enough to earn him a place in Nigeria's recent squads, though getting minutes could prove challenging due to the Super Eagles' quite ridiculous depth up front.

  • Akor Adams Montpellier 2023-24Getty Images

    Akor Adams (Montpellier)

Speaking of Nigerian centre-forwards making a splash, Adams has burst onto the scene with Montpellier in recent months. Fresh off a fruitful spell with Norwegian side Lillestrom, the 23-year-old has already netted five Ligue 1 goals since joining in the summer.

Championship clubs Middlesbrough, Leicester and Leeds were all credited with an interest in Adams before he opted to join the French side, but it appears he made the correct choice.

He is yet to be capped at international level, but continuing his electric goalscoring form might see him sneak into Jose Peseiro's squad for the African Cup of Nations in 2024.

  • Santiago Gimenez Feyenoord 2023-24Getty Images

    Santiago Gimenez (Feyenoord)

After drawing a blank against Fortuna Sittard on the opening day, Gimenez has netted in each of Feyenoord's following seven Eredivisie games, totalling 12 goals already.

The Mexican showed promise last season, top scoring for the Dutch giants as they secured their first league title in six years, but he's exploded into another stratosphere in recent months.

The crowning moment of his season so far was netting a hat-trick against rivals Ajax. The three goals took 47 hours in total to record, with the initial fixture being abandoned just before the hour mark due to crowd trouble.

  • Luuk de Jong PSV 2023-24Getty Images

    Luuk de Jong (PSV)

De Jong has enjoyed a fascinating career. From underwhelming at Newcastle and Sevilla, to somehow finding himself spearheading Barcelona's attack, the Dutchman will have plenty of stories to tell when he eventually hangs up his boots.

Perhaps the only constant in his footballing life has been the ease with which he has scored in the Eredivisie - and there's been more of the same of that this season.

De Jong has been absolutely brilliant for PSV this season, chipping in with 13 goals and seven assists. He'll be hoping he can continue this good form when Arsenal travel to the Netherlands in the Champions League group stages, with the Gunners easing to a 4-0 victory in the first game.

  • Savinho Girona 2023-24Getty Images

    Savinho (Girona)

Savinho's career thus far has had a uniquely-modern flavour. The Brazilian wonderkid was acquired by the City Football Group in June 2022 and initially dished out to Troyes, one of the many clubs under their guise, rather than flagship side Manchester City.

He hasn't made an appearance for the French side, instead heading out on loan to PSV for the 2022-23 campaign and Girona - another part-CFG-owned team - this season.

He's been excellent for the Spanish upstarts, already laying on four assists and scoring twice in La Liga. Still just 19, the long-term plan is to get him into City's first team and the early signs are extremely promising.

  • Vangelis Pavlidis AZ 2023-24Getty Images

    Vangelis Pavlidis (AZ Alkmaar)

Pavlidis has been consistency personified for AZ Alkmaar this season, netting in each and every one of their eight Eredivisie games to kick-off the campaign. Premier League fans might be about to get better acquainted with the free-scoring frontman, too.

With Ivan Toney attracting interest from both Chelsea and Arsenal, Brentford are said to be eyeing up Pavlidis as a potential replacement for their talisman. Given the Bees' recent hit rate with transfers, the Greece international is definitely one to watch very closely over the coming months.

  • Jonas Wind Wolfsburg 2023-241Getty Images

    Jonas Wind (Wolfsburg)

Wind is not a new name on the scene, having already racked up 21 caps for Denmark. However, this season he's hinted at properly fulfilling his sky-high potential with a string of fine performances.

He kicked off the Bundesliga campaign with back-to-back braces against Heidenheim and FC Koln, before adding goals in a vital win over Champions League newbies Union Berlin and a resolute Eintracht Frankfurt side.

In the past, Wind has spoken of his desire to play for Arsenal one day. Keep this up and the Gunners might be tempted to have a sniff in January, particularly if they miss out on Toney to Chelsea.

  • Maximilian Beier Hoffenheim 2023-24Getty Images

    Maximilian Beier (Hoffenheim)

Prior to this season, Beier spent back-to-back campaigns on loan at Hannover 96 in the 2.Bundesliga. He was far from prolific at that level, so few predicted him making much of an impact when he returned to his parent club.

But the 20-year-old has so far surpassed expectations, scoring five times through his first seven Bundesliga appearances, as well as recording an assist.

Already capped at Under-21 level by Germany, it won't be long until senior coach Julian Nagelsmann starts to take notice. Premier League clubs are said to be monitoring him closely, too.

  • Bryan Zaragoza Granada 2023-24Getty Images

    Bryan Zaragoza (Granada)

Granada triumphed in an enthralling Segunda Division title race last season, sealing top spot by just three points. Zaragoza was an important cog in the machine, but he was far from the star man.

That has changed since the club returned to the top tier, with the forward already helping himself to five La Liga goals despite his team's struggles. Additionally, only Leroy Sane has completed more take-ons than Zaragoza in Europe's top-five leagues this season.

Two of his goals came against Barcelona, in what was the best performance of the 22-year-old's career to date. The swagger he exhibited for his second strike, where he bamboozled Jules Kounde twice, suggested that he's destined for a move to a bigger club. Spain boss Luis de la Fuente is already a fan, handing him a surprise senior call-up earlier this month.

  • Noa Lang 2023-24Getty Images

    Noa Lang (PSV)

Lang was linked with a string of clubs across Europe this summer, eventually opting to join PSV. It's proved to be an inspired decision so far, with the Dutch international averaging over a goal every other game in the Eredivisie so far.

His performances have helped fire PSV to the top of the table. They're also a ridiculous 19 points ahead of crisis-club Ajax - something that Lang will be particularly enjoying. After coming through Ajax's youth academy, he was shipped out on loan and then sold by Erik ten Hag, though he's clearly not let this setback affect him.

  • Brice Samba Lens 2023-24Getty Images

    Brice Samba (Lens)

Samba received a bit of criticism after leaving Nottingham Forest following their return to the Premier League, but his decision to join Lens has been vindicated. Had he stayed at the City Ground, he would have missed out on the Champions League football he's experiencing this season. Samba has looked right at home on the biggest stage, too.

Only three goalkeepers have made more saves in the competition so far, with the one-cap France international's stoic performance playing a key role in his side's surprise victory over Arsenal.
