  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool and Bayern Munich are both set to change managers this summer but will now have to look elsewhere for their next coach. Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly an option for the Reds, while Bayern are considering bringing Julian Nagelsmann back to the Allianz Arena. Alonso's decision to snub Liverpool and Bayern has been branded a "terrible decision" by former Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole, and Keys has also revealed he's deeply unimpressed with the situation.

  • WHAT KEYS SAID

He said on beIN Sports: "Never will there be a time again where those jobs will be available to him. He’s got a choice. And never will there be a time where he’s coveted to the degree that he is now, ever again. Instead of taking one of those jobs he’s decided to stay at Bayer Leicester-kusen.

"The reason I describe them as such is because they will never, ever have a season like they’ve had Where does he take them from here? I think he should have had the courage to take one of the jobs that is better than his, but he’s decided to sit safe. And that led me to question the size of his cojones. Now’s the time, is it not? Right now, I think they’ve [Liverpool] have dodged a bullet. Now’s the time, he cannot have a better season at Bayer Leicester-kusen than he’s had."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Leverkusen now have 73 points to their name, equalling their club record from the 1999-2000 campaign. Alonso's team have already have collected more points than last season's champions Bayern.

    WHAT NEXT FOR ALONSO

Leverkusen have famously never won the Bundesliga but look destined to finally end that drought under Alonso, while also putting an end to Bayern's run of 11 straight championships. Such a victory would be a huge achievement for the former Spain international and he will no doubt be eager to manage his team in the Champions League next season. Alonso is just 42 and, if he continue to impress with Leverkusen, there seems little doubt he will continue to be on the radar of Europe's top clubs.
