'Wembley of the North' is on! Man Utd's plans to replace Old Trafford with 100,000-seater stadium approved by council with promise of £7.3bn to local economy

According to the Daily Mail, officials at Trafford Council unanimously backed plans for a new Old Trafford on Monday. The report adds it is believed the project will add £7.3 billion ($9bn) to the economy and provide 90,000 jobs and 15,000 homes.

This comes less than a day after United's plans to build this new state-of-the-art ground, dubbed the 'Wembley of the North', looked to have hit a snag due to a row between American rock band the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Lancashire Cricket Club. But in addition to Chancellor Rachel Reeves 'championing' the Old Trafford project, this council development is a real breakthrough.

The Mail adds that a decision on whether to build a new 100,000 stadium or refurbish the current ground, and add around 14,000 seats to take it to 87,000, is expected at the end of the season.

The report adds United will now seek a 'top class consultant team' that will be charged with 'helping to shape a high profile strategic masterplan for the regeneration of the area'.
