  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Argyle avoided relegation from the Championship on the final day of the season having sacked previous boss Ian Foster in April. This is Rooney's first job since he was relieved of his duties by Birmingham City in January after just 83 days and 15 games in charge, with the club down in 20th having been ninth when he was installed. The Blues eventually went down themselves on the closing day of the second-tier season.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Plymouth, a club with a storied history but one that has never played in England's top division, is looking forward to a fresh start under Rooney's leadership. Although they have not disclosed the specifics and length of Rooney's contract, it has been reported that the former striker has signed on a three-year deal.

    WHAT ROONEY SAID

“Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I would like to thank the Chairman and Board for the faith they have shown in me," said Rooney after the appointment.

“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army. I have experienced first-hand how talented the existing group of players is here – and also the incredible atmosphere at Home Park. The club is on an exciting long-term journey, with a progressive plan in place. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of it. I can’t wait for the Championship season to start in August.”

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Joining Rooney at Plymouth will be analyst Pete Shuttleworth, who has previously worked with him at Derby County, D.C. United, and Birmingham City. This continuity in his backroom staff is expected to provide Rooney with the support needed to succeed in his new role. Additionally, existing coaches Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, and goalkeeping coach Daryl Flahavan will remain in their positions, ensuring a blend of continuity and fresh perspectives within the coaching unit.
