Watch out Harry Kane: Bayern Munich identify top target as Bavarians plan to sign 'strong back-up' to England striker

With Kane currently in undroppable form, the most that Bayern Munich can do is provide him with stout competition, seeing that at present they don't have a high profile back-up for the prolific Englishman. However, this could be about to change, as it has been revealed that the German outfit are closely monitoring Lille's Canadian striker Jonathan David, who would provide more than sufficient extra fire-power to bolster their goal-scoring ranks.

Kane, who cost Munich a pricey £86m last summer, has been in golden form for the German juggernauts. Notching 61 goals in as many games since signing, he is without a doubt set to be their go to man up front for the next few years. However, they are lacking a capable back-up in Kane's position. Bayern do have the services of exciting youngster Mathys Tel to call on should they require them, but with his contract status currently uncertain, Bayern have had to start making enquiries into other options, with David emerging as the lead candidate

Jonathan David would be a quality choice of back-up forward. Having played in France's top division for the last five years, and scoring 97 goals in that time, he has long been touted to move to a more challenging league, and signing for Munich would provide him with the more challenging opportunity that he so obviously deserves.

Munich have a history of employing world-class strikers throughout their history; players such as Robert Lewandowski, Mario Gomez, Gerd Muller, Claudio Pizarro, Jurgen Klinsmann and of course Harry Kane amongst many others. A move to Munich would present Jonathan David with the opportunity to instill his name alongside those other club legends, although he will need to boot Kane out of the starting lineup to make such an impression.

Kane himself is not slowing down and reinforced his claim to Munich's starting striker spot with a goalscoring appearance for England against Ireland on Sunday evening.

In an X (formerly Twitter) post by transfer reporter and Bayern Munich fan Florian Plettenberg, he states that: "Max Eberl has been following Jonathan David for several years and has always kept an eye on him, including now at FC Bayern as revealed. What makes him so interesting for Bayern is that the 24-year-old striker is most likely coming onto the market on a free transfer next summer. Since the future of Mathys Tel is uncertain, it is not out of the question that Bayern might sign a strong backup for Harry Kane."

However, Plettenberg added that Munich are not the only side pursuing the Canadian, adding: "Inter and Juventus also like David very much."

With international fixtures now finished for the year, Kane will return to Bayern Munich in the next few days and rejoin the squad, ahead of the home fixture against Augsburg next Friday. Bar an unexpected injury, Kane is almost guaranteed to start this game, and will have his eye on a multiple-goal performance.

For David, his quest to continue impressing Europe's most illustrious sides continues when Lille take on Rennes in Ligue 1. With 13 goals in 19 appearances so far this season, David is more likely to get on the scoresheet than not.
