Wales sack head coach Rob Page following embarrassing draw with minnows Gibraltar

The Football Association of Wales confirmed that Page had been relieved of his duties on Friday. He was initially handed the job on an interim basis in November 2020, when Ryan Giggs was arrested arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend. Giggs was cleared of those charges last year, but Page took over permanently in September 2022 after leading Wales to Euro 2020.

Page followed this up by leading Wales at their first World Cup since 1958 in Qatar, where they finished bottom of Group B. Since then, the Dragons' stock has continued to decline. This process culminated with a terrible goalless draw with Gibraltar earlier this month which led to Page facing harsh criticism. And, ultimately, the FAW have decided to act.

Dave Adams, FAW Chief Football Officer, said: “I would like to thank Rob for his work with the Association over the last seven years, firstly as the U21s Head Coach and then onto the role of Cymru Head Coach. Rob’s work has delivered success reaching the Round of 16 at EURO 2020 and qualification to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and during his period we also integrated 18 pathway players into the senior squad. As we move forward this experience will support our objective to consistently qualify our Men’s National Team to major tournaments.”

Wales have made no mention as to who will take over from Page. They do at least have some time to get their house in order, with the Dragons not in action again until September when they face Turkey and Montenegro in the UEFA Nations League.
