Valencia take 'disciplinary measures' against Rafa Mir as ex-Wolves striker is removed from squad after arrest over sexual assault allegations

The 27-year-old former Wolves forward was taken into custody after complaints were filed with the police accusing him and a friend of sexually assaulting two women. On Wednesday, Mir was released on conditional bail as authorities continue to probe the serious claims made against him.

In response to the arrest, Valencia have announced that they have initiated internal disciplinary measures against Mir. The La Liga club have not publicly revealed details of the punitive action, but according to ESPN, the striker will be removed from the squad for an indefinite period.

"Valencia wish to reiterate the club's firm condemnation of any violence in any form while respecting the presumption of innocence that our legal system promulgates," the club said in a statement.

"The justice system must decide the course of action regarding the allegations for which Rafa Mir is being investigated. However, as far as the club is concerned, and within the framework of its competencies, we have analysed the situation and decided to undertake disciplinary measures.

"Specifically, the club will proceed to open a case against Rafa Mir as we feel his way of behaving, in his time off, indisputably affects the professional performance expected of him as a player of this club, damaging, in addition, the confidence that our fans have in all of the players. The club will continue to collaborate with the police in whatever way required."

Mir has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the allegations of sexual assault. In a public apology, the striker acknowledged his failure to adhere to the strict professional standards expected of him, particularly during a difficult start to the season for Valencia.

As part of the conditions for his release on bail, Mir has had his passport confiscated and is prohibited from leaving Spain while the investigation is ongoing. Additionally, the footballer is barred from communicating with the alleged victims, and a restraining order has been issued, mandating that he keep a distance of at least 500 meters from the two women involved in the case. Mir must also report to the court on a weekly basis as part of the bail conditions, ensuring his compliance with the terms while the legal process unfolds.

The judge overseeing the case will need to decide whether the evidence presented is sufficient to bring the case to trial or if the charges should be dismissed. Until the legal process concludes, Mir’s future in football remains clouded by uncertainty.
