Thiago Almada set for MLS-record transfer away from Atlanta United

Per The Athletic, the 23-year-old is on the verge of finalising a record transfer from Atlanta United to Brazilian top-division side Botafogo this summer. The American side have reportedly agreed to sell their star attacker for a league record $21 million (£16m) plus add-ons which could further increase the valuation of the deal to $30m (£23m)

The Argentina international has been linked with a move away from the club for some time now. Other than the Brazilians, Premier League side Crystal Palace and Ligue 1 giants Lyon were also keen on signing the player ahead of the 2024-25 season on a record deal.

Almada was a part of the Albiceleste squad that claimed the World Cup trophy in Qatar in 2022, and has been dubbed one of the brightest stars in MLS since. Last year, he was included in the league's Best XI and was named MLS Young Player of the Year.

The Five Stripes, who are currently ninth in the Eastern Conference standings, will be next seen in action on Thursday against the New England Revolution in a league clash.
