  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    MC Alger lifted the Algerian Ligue 1 title following a goalless draw in their final game of the season against NC Magra on Saturday. After the full-time whistle blew, the home fans reacted jubilantly as they set off green flares around the stadium. Amid the euphoria and celebrations at the Stade du 5 Juillet [5 July Stadium], tragedy struck when several fans fell from the upper stands, as reported by The Sun.

    As per local media reports, a part of the security barrier collapsed in the upper tier, which led to the fans falling straight to the stands below. More than 70 people were rushed to the hospital and three fans died during the tragic incident. MC Alger released a statement confirming the death of one of their fans, which read: "It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands."

    The Algerian Ministry of Health also released a statement, saying: "The Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured people, while three deaths were recorded. Ben Aknoun Hospital also received 27 injured people, while Bab El Oued Hospital received 16."
