PSG attempt to lend a helping hand to Lyon with Bradley Barcola payment but gesture won't benefit relegated rivals

According to LiveFoot, PSG have expressed an intention to expedite the full payment of Bradley Barcola’s €50 million (£42m/$54m) transfer fee to Lyon amid the club’s relegation crisis. Reports say that PSG are willing to pay the whole remaining amount early to help Lyon with its financial challenges. However, OL had already factored the payment through a bank in August 2023, receiving an immediate advance of €45m (£38m/$48m) to improve cash flow and comply with National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) regulations.

DNCG relegated Lyon to Ligue 2 after they failed to meet the financial criteria for the 2025–26 season. While PSG's proposed gesture appears supportive, it will not directly benefit the struggling Lyon. The rest of Barcola's payments are legally supposed to go to the bank that paid them the money last year, not to the club. So, it would not make Lyon's cash flow better or change the DNCG decision.

The club is likely to feature in Ligue 2 next season even though they finished sixth on the Ligue 1 table for the 2024-25 season, forcing John Textor to step down from all of his leadership roles.

Lyon remain in talks with the DNCG to overturn their relegation, potentially through new financial guarantees or appeals. However, unless a revised plan is accepted or funds are injected directly, they face competing in Ligue 2 for the upcoming season. PSG, meanwhile, have no obligation to modify the Barcola payment structure beyond existing contractual terms.
