Pedri sheds light on Xavi's brutal dressing room fines at Barcelona as he reveals Hansi Flick's different approach to discipline

Pedri has worked under both Xavi and Flick at Barcelona and has opened up on the differences between the two coaches, particularly when it comes to discipline in an interview on 'Martínez y Hermanos'. The Barca star has revealed that Xavi would fine players €1,000 per minute if they were late. The fine would also double for every extra minute they failed to appear, meaning tardy players were hit hard in the pocket. Yet it's a different story entirely under new boss Flick. If a player is late then the German simply takes them out of the starting line-up for the team's next match or drops them altogether, according to Pedri.

Flick's method has already been used this season as defender Jules Kounde was dropped from the Barcelona starting XI against Alaves earlier in the season after being late for a team meeting. Kounde had been an ever-present for Flick before the match, but the German took the decision to bench his French star. Kounde eventually appeared as a second-half substitute as Barcelona ran out 3-0 winners.

Flick has enjoyed a brilliant start to life at Barcelona since replacing Xavi. His team are currently nine points clear at the top of the table in Spain and have scored 40 goals in La Liga in 2024-25, the second-highest scoring record after their first 12 games of the season in their entire history.

Barcelona will aim to maintain their great form at home and abroad before the international break. Flick's men take on Crvena Zvezda next in the Champions League and then travel to Real Sociedad in La Liga.
