Mikel Arteta provides positive Jurrien Timber and Ben White injury update ahead of Arsenal clash with Southampton

The Dutch defender was taken off at half-time during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in their midweek Champions League fixture. This decision raised concerns about a potential setback, especially since Timber had only recently returned from a serious ACL injury. Moreover, Timber was left out of the Netherlands national team for the upcoming international break which further increased speculation about the seriousness of his injury. Meanwhile, White has been absent from Arsenal's last three matches due to a groin injury.

However, Arteta was quick to calm any fears, explaining that the substitution was merely a precautionary measure and informed that both Timber and White are on the verge of making a comeback, although a final decision on their involvement against Southampton will be made closer to match day.

"We had to modify training for our players, we’ve done the same today because of the load they had," he said. "It’s a decision to make this afternoon whether to involve them, yes or no. Yeah, they are close. [Takehiro] Tomiyasu as well is close to being involved, so good news."

In addition to Timber and White, Arteta provided updates on two more Arsenal stars: Oleksandr Zinchenko and Martin Odegaard. Zinchenko, the versatile Ukrainian full-back, has seen limited action this season, as he has been suffering from a calf issue. The Gunners boss was optimistic about Zinchenko’s recovery, suggesting that the player could be back in action shortly after the international break if his recovery continues to progress as expected.

"Oleks probably after the international break, if everything goes well, he’s progressing very well," Arteta said.

Odegaard is also working hard to return to full fitness after suffering ankle ligament damage during international duty with Norway. The Norwegian playmaker has missed the last six Arsenal matches, and while Arteta is hopeful about Odegaard’s determination, he admitted that the timeline for his return remains uncertain.

“Martin, it’s very difficult because I expected him still with the boot and a lot of things,” Arteta said. “He’s working so hard, and he’s feeling good, but it’s hard to give a clear timeline on when he’ll be back.”

The Gunners have started the season strongly, but with injuries testing the depth of the squad, the imminent return of Timber and White is crucial in maintaining momentum and staying competitive in both domestic and European competitions. However, the manager might not choose to rush the duo against the Saints before the international break as Russel Martin's men are currently 19th in the standings with four defeats in the last five games.
