    WHAT HAPPENED?

The Manchester United captain has asked for the rule change after Amad Diallo was handed a second yellow card for removing his shirt after scoring in the injury time of extra-time against Liverpool to hand the Red Devils a berth in the FA Cup semi-finals. Current rules state that if a player is to remove their shirt on the field before having been substituted off, the player shall receive a yellow card to their name.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The rule itself has been there for a long time and after the game Amad revealed during the frenzy in the 121st minute, he forgot that he had already been booked earlier by referee John Brooks. However, he also revealed that the goal and the feeling of the win made the sending-off feel less disappointing to him.

It is very unlikely at the moment that the standing rules regarding the booking of a player for removing his shirt will be changed any time soon. The rule also came under scrutiny in 2020 when Lionel Messi was shown a yellow card against Osasuna after revealing a tribute shirt to Diego Maradona after the Argentine legend's death earlier in the week.
